The forms of high relief ancient sculptures project far enough to be in some degree independent of their background. As they approach the fullness of ancient sculptures in the round, they become of necessity considerably undercut. In many high reliefs, where parts of the composition are completely detached from their background and fully in the round, it is often impossible to tell from the front whether or not a figure is actually attached to its background.
